Team Tales - July 2023

This month our Team Tales features our favourite creator and orchestrator of all things product based - Richard Hodson!
  • Can you describe yourself in 10 words?

I'm a shy introvert with a good sense of humour.
  • Tell us a little bit about yourself and your work background?

Prior to joining BI, I gained valuable experience working in various roles within the retail and hospitality sectors. I owe my success at BI to the valuable lessons I learned from my previous employers, such as the significance of time management, taking initiative, and problem-solving. Those skills have been instrumental in my journey here. Outside of work, I live a simple and stress-free life. I enjoy visiting the pub for a pint, indulging in Bristol's finest restaurants, or escaping into the virtual world of video games.
  • How long have you been with Built Intelligence?

I have been with Built Intelligence for  5 years, since June 2018. As far as I know, I am the longest-serving member of the staff.

  • So, can you tell us what your role entails at BI and what a ‘day in the life of’ looks like!

Over the past 5 years, my role has undergone significant changes. When I first joined at the age of 27 in 2018, my primary responsibilities revolved around responding to Academy support tickets (before FastDraft existed) and assisting with administrative tasks.

During that time, I also started exploring online course creation, albeit at a basic level, which primarily involved embedding videos. Currently, for the past few years, I have been managing content creation. This entails building online course content, writing copy, publishing contract templates and whitepapers, creating marketing emails, engaging in graphic design, and coordinating webinar schedules.
  • What’s the best thing about your role?

The best part of my role is the exposure to around 10 different software tools. These tools have given me skills I never thought I would acquire, and that's what makes the job so exciting. Regardless of the specific role, there's always something new to learn here, and I truly appreciate that.

  • What has been your finest moment at BI – what achievement have you been most proud of?

I take pride in the eLearning courses I've developed in collaboration with our subject matter experts. The feedback I've received has been incredibly valuable, and knowing that our courses contribute to personal development and enable businesses to achieve more successful projects means a great deal to me.
  •  Tell us a little something about the person behind the role?!

I proudly embrace my inner nerd and find myself deeply entrenched in the Apple ecosystem. My girlfriend jokingly claims that I love my gadgets more than her, and while she may or may not be correct, I can't deny my fascination. When I'm not immersed in the latest video game, pretending to be a space cowboy or something of the sort, I enjoy embarking on long hikes and going for a run. I only run so I can savour guilt-free indulgence in a large pizza. I wouldn't consider myself a fitness fanatic by any means.
  •  Final thoughts or tips?

All I have to say is don’t be afraid to ask for help. When you’re struggling it’s not good to spend too much time alone, especially if you are feeling low and vulnerable. In my experience, people genuinely want to help.
