Net Zero Heroes: Helping the NHS Achieve its Carbon Reduction Goals

Net Zero Heroes: Helping the NHS Achieve its Carbon Reduction Goals

This online course will explore the concept of 'net zero' hospitals, which refers to the reduction of carbon emissions associated with the usage and construction of hospitals to zero or below. With the NHS embarking on a long-term programme of investment in health infrastructure, including building 40 new hospitals with £3.7 billion funding, this course will focus on what AECOM analysis has shown to have the most impact on reducing embodied carbon emissions: the building structure.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Describe the concept of net zero and explain how it applies to the NHS
  2. Identify the challenges faced by hospitals in achieving net zero carbon emissions
  3. Describe the targets for embodied carbon in new hospitals and explain how they were determined
  4. Explain the specific requirements that hospitals have in terms of building design and adaptability
